History of Speeddating
As far as we can establish Speeddating was invented in the late nineties in California. An orthodox Jewish rabbi by the name of Rabbi Yaacov Deyo came up with the concept of the speed date to help Jewish singles meet and marry. Rabbi Deyo is educational director if Aish HaTorah, a Jewish resource group in LA with branches all over the world.
From its beginnings in the Jewish community the concept of the speed date, now commonly known as speeddating or speed dating, rapidly spread across the States and then across the Atlantic.
As early as 2000 speeddating was featured on Richard and Judy but it wasn’t until late 2002 that the idea of a speed date really started to take hold in the UK. SpeedDater was the first speeddating company to really exploit the media.
Articles soon followed in local and national newspapers and on television and helped speeddating in the UK reach the ‘tipping point’ where suddenly almost everyone had heard of the new singles craze.
Since then SpeedDater has grown rapidly to become Europe’s largest and most successful speeddating company. Although a number of companies have tried to jump on the speeddating bandwagon they’ve found that it takes more to run a successful speed date event than just a pile of pens and scorecards.
